Eric Clinton Kirk Newman was born on July 24th, 1984, in a town called Scarborough, located south of Toronto by Lake Ontario. He was the eldest of three and his parents split when he was young. Online postings revealed that Newman was close to his grandmother. When his mother got a new boyfriend, Newman described him as a "monster." Newman ended up drifting from his father who was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. His sister Melissa, was one of the only people Newman would describe as beautiful other than himself. In high school he was an outcast and did not act or stand out. As a teen he struggled with depression and underwent psychiatric assessment and was prescribed medication for life. In 2006, he legally changed his name to Luka Rocco Magnotta after getting into the pornography industry. Magnotta was know to star in gay pornographic films as well as working as a stripper and escort. Magnotta also auditioned for various reality shows, being rejected for each one he auditioned for. On December 23, 2014, Magnotta was convicted of first degree murder. This wasn't your typical murder case. On May 25, 2012, after international student Lin Jun had been reported missing, a video of a naked male tied to a bed being continuously stabbed by an ice pick was uploaded to the internet. It turns out the victim was international student Lin Jun. It was declared that Magnotta was the man stabbing Jun with the pick and knife, and performing acts of necrophilia. A week later both the Conservative and Liberal Parties of Canada received separate boxes containing Lin Jun's body parts. More of Jun's body parts were discovered in Montreal by a garbage man. Shortly after that, St. George's school in Vancouver had received more human remains. All the parts were identified to belong to Lin Jun. After the police had linked Magnotta to the murder, he had fled. On June 4th, Magnotta had been captured by the Berlin police in Germany. Magnotta was charged with first degree murder, committing an indignity to a body, harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament, mailing obscene material and uploading obscene video footage to the web.
Criminal Life 2015/09/27 Serena Pistotnik Luka Magnotta's criminal life began in 2004 when he befriended a 21 year old woman online who had the mental capacity of an 8-12 year old. Magnotta used her credit cards to rack up $1000s in unpaid bills. Police also allege that Magnotta sexually assaulted the woman and videotaped it. Before the trail started the Crown dropped the sexual assault charges. Had he been convicted of this crime Magnotta would have been put into sexual offender monitoring and had to report to officers for life. In June 2005, Magnotta was convicted of fraud charges where a judge warned him, "You have a medical problem. You need to always take medication. If you do not your life is going to get messed up." Magnotta was sentenced to nine months of community service, and 12 months on probation. In late December 2010, Magnotta posted a video online of himself placing two kittens into a plastic bag and vacuuming the air out. The video sparked outrage. Online investigators tried to bring Magnotta to justice but he eluded authorities. All the evidence was gained online and was not enough for a warrant. A year later in November and December 2011, one year after the vacuum kitten killings, Magnotta posted new disturbing videos and photos online. One video shows him feeding a cat to a live python while another shows a kitten duct taped to the end of a broom and is drowned in a bathtub. In February 2011, the Toronto Police opened a file on Magnotta for the animal cruelty accusations. On May 24th, 2012, Jun Lin, an international student from China studying at Concordia University in Montreal, failed to show up for work. On May 25th a video called "1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick" appeared online which shows a man bound on a bed. First he is alive, then there is an edit, and the man is dead. The video lasts 11 horrific minutes and someone stabs the body repeatedly with an ice pick, and then dismembers the body with a knife. During May and June 2012, various body parts were mailed to the Conservative Party Headquarters in Ottawa and to two Vancouver elementary schools. Through DNA testing these body parts were determined to be that of Jun Lin. On May 30th, 2012, Montreal Police named Magnotta as a suspect in the murder and disappearance of Jun Lin and on May 31st Interpol issued a Red Notice for Magnotta. After a global manhunt, Magnotta was arrested in Berlin at an internet cafe on June 4th, 2012. On June 19, 2012, upon arriving back in Canada, Magnotta plead not guilty to the charges of first degree murder, committing an indignity to a human body, posting obscene material on the internet, mailing obscene material, and criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other member members of Parliament. Magnotta was found guilty of all charges on December 23, 2014, and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 25 years, and also sentenced to 19 years for other offences to be served concurrently. He will be 77 years old at the time of his eligibility for parole. Investigation

2015/11/10 The investigation into Luka Magnotta started when former US soldier, Ryan Boyle, came across the kitten killing videos online and was rightfully disgusted. Boyle started a Facebook group dedicated to finding the kitten killer. In early 2011, the Animal Beta Project, activists who target animal abusers online started their own investigation into the kitten killer. The Animal Beta Project feared that the individual behind the killings would continue and progress. A picture surfaced online, believed to be posted by Magnotta, showed him with two kittens in the same apartment as the video in which he killed kittens. Investigators received an anonymous email, strongly suspected to be sent by Magnotta, naming himself as the kitten killer and lied about his location saying he lived in places such a Russia, Los Angeles, and Miami. Upon googling his name, investigators found over 100 blogs, Facebook profiles and YouTube accounts all believed to be made by Magnotta. Magnotta photo shopped himself into different cities to make him seem worldly and to make his location unknown. Through photos online, investigators were able to find the GPS location linked to pictures and ended up linking him to Toronto. The online investigators contacted the Toronto Police, RCMP, and the OSPCA, and in February 2011 a file was opened on Luka Magnotta.
In November and December 2011, one year after the vacuum kitten killings, new horrific videos emerged online. In one video, a man is shown feeding a cat to a live python, and in another a kitten is duct taped to a broom and drowned in a bathtub. Also in December 2011, the British tabloid The Sun, published an article on the kitten killer and Magnotta showed up at the office to deny that he did it. Two days later, The Sun received a threatening email, believed to be sent by Magnotta, warning of the next movie he will create and that it will include humans. The London Police were notified, but ended up not investigating because it was outside of their jurisdiction.
In 2012, investigators receive a tip that Magnotta may be in the Montreal area, and through pictures online and finding certain geological characteristics of the area and searching on Google Maps, investigators found that he had in fact moved to Montreal. The OSPCA contacted the Montreal SPCA who tried to get a Crown Prosecutor to get a warrant on Magnotta. The warrant was denied due to the fact that all the evidence on Magnotta was gained from the Internet.

CPTED Project
This residence we viewed on Columbia street across from Denny's was in need of some improvements, but we could see that some improvements had already been taken. The first thing we noticed was the black wire fenuce, and our thinking is that maybe this household had break ins in the past and took action to put black on the fence as opposed to the regular silver. We thought the house looked a bit run down and could do with a fresh coat of paint. The fence also is not very high which would be easy to jump. The shrubs and bushes are not very high which is good for neighbours to be able to see any suspicious activity.
